Enabling SMTP Authentication in Your E-mail Client

Enabling SMTP Authentication in Mac Mail v 2.x (OS X.4 - Tiger) or Mac Mail v 1.3 (OS X.3 - Panther)

Please Note: One week prior to SMTP Authentication being required in your area, you will receive an e-mail from FrontierNet, informing you that the change will need to be made. These e-mails are sent to our customers on a Tuesday. Please wait until the following Tuesday (exactly one week) after receiving the notification to perform the steps below to enable SMTP Authentication.

Feel free to bookmark this page for future reference.

The screenshots below represent Mac Mail v 2.x (OS X.4 - Tiger), but they are the same for Mac Mail v 1.3 (OS X.3 - Panther).

Step 1:

To enable SMTP Authentication in Mac Mail v 2.x or v 1.3, while you are in the program, click on "Mail" and select "Preferences".  Next >>>

Step 2:

You should now be on the "Account Information" tab.

If your incoming mail server is set to pop3.frontiernet.net, pop3.citlink.net, or pop3.newnorth.net, make sure that your complete FrontierNet, Citlink, or Newnorth e-mail address is present in the "User Name" field.

If your incoming mail server is set to mail.ctaz.com, make sure that your "User Name" is your complete CTAZ e-mail address, entered in the format of: username@citlink.net (replacing "ctaz.com" with "citlink.net"). Please note, this will *not* change your e-mail address.

If your incoming mail server is set to something other than pop3.frontiernet.net, pop3.citlink.net, mail.ctaz.com, or pop3.newnorth.net, do not make any changes to your incoming mail server information.

If your outgoing mail server is set to smtp.frontiernet.net, smtp.citlink.net, mail.ctaz.com, or smtp.newnorth.net, select "Server Settings" to proceed. Next >>>

If your outgoing mail server is set to something other than smtp.frontiernet.net, smtp.citlink.net, mail.ctaz.com, or smtp.newnorth.net, no changes need to be made at this time.

Step 3:

From the "Authentication" drop-down menu, select "Password". Enter your complete FrontierNet, Citlink / CTAZ, or Newnorth e-mail address in the "User Name" field. If your e-mail address is in the format of username@ctaz.com, change "ctaz.com" to "citlink.net" (example: username@ctaz.com becomes username@citlink.net). Please note, this will *not* change your e-mail address.

Enter your password in the "Password" field.  Click "OK" to proceed.  Next >>>

Step 4:

Click the red circle at the top of the window to save your changes. Next >>>

Step 5:

Select "Save" when asked if you'd like to save your changes. That's it!  SMTP authentication has been enabled
